昆野さんは､聖なるものが､あるいはそれを囲む精霊たちが,自由に飛期する天上をすばらしく描いている。具象的なすがたや形はなにひとつ描いていない。その意味では､抽象画と呼ぶべきであろう。しかし、これほどに天上のありさまを、天上の光を、天上の香りを描いた作品はないと私は思う。それはちょうど、ヨーロッパ中世の人びとが発明したステンドグラスによって、天国に満ちみちている光そのものを具体的に表現しようとしたのと同じである。
　昆野さんは繊細な心を抱いたまま、戦時下には一人の兵士として生き、戦後は一時、孤独な生活を試み、 50歳を迎えるころには洗礼を受けてカトリック信者になっている。その間、何回もの人生の壁にぶち当たり、その開けにくいドアをこじ開けながら生き抜き、絵が描けなくなった時期を越えながら、現在に至っている。現在の作品は、そういう昆野さんの人生そのものから生まれてきた｢天上｣のすがたにちがいないのだ。昆野さんこそは、わが国で唯一の抽象的宗教画家だと私は高く評価しているのである。

Seiichi Konno's works profoundly capture theHeavens where sacredness and the Holy spiritssurrounding it are flying freely. Interestingly, onecannot see any concrete figures in his paintings.In that sense, we could call his paintings abstract,yet I feel no other painter has ever expressed thelight, the fragrance, indeed the overall essence ofHeaven, as well as Konno.Just as the MiddleAgeEuropeans invented stained glass to express thelight suffusing heaven, his works convey the samecharacter and ingenuity.
Konno, while keeping his delicate heart, survivedas a soldier during the war, and attempted a soli-tary life for a time after its conclusion. He wasbaptized a Catholic when he was near 50.Throughout these experiences, he encounteredmany hardships, living through them by striving toopen the difficult doors, overcame the periodwhen he was unable to paint, and finally reachedthe point he has now. I believe that his paintingsare nothing less than the expression of the stateof Heaven, an expression that is truly the resultof his unique life. I give my high evaluation to Kon-no as the sole abstract religious painter in Japan.

昆野清一　プロフィール
1921年青森県八戸市生れ｡ 1943年中央大学法科卒業｡小学校5年時から油絵を始め､それが画業への道と繋がる。1955年から59年まで4回個展｡その後発表をやめ寡黙な制作三昧の生活に入る｡終始無所属を貫き､故郷のアトリエに腰を据えて制作に没頭する異色の抽象画家｡カトリック者であることが深く作風を支え続ける｡1995年7月に画業の概要と現在､ 96年8月｢溯源画巻｣を中心にその画業の特質をそれぞれNHKがテレビ放映｡

Born in Hachinohe､Aomori, in 1921. Graduat-ed from the Department of Law, Chuo Uni-versity in 1943. Began oil painting when hewas in the 5th grade of elementary school.Held four personal exhibitions between 1955and 1959. Thereafter ceased exhibiting andhas simply enjoyed production at his studio inHachinohe. A unique abstract painter not affil-iated with any school of painting, his Catholi-cism profoundly influences his style. NHK fea-tured Konno's life as a painter in 1995 andthe characteristics of his works in　1996.
